THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, January 26, 2006.

Harold A. Swanson, 82, of Ames, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, in Ames. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at First United Methodist Church in Ames with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Harold Swanson was born Jan. 17, 1924, in Hastings, Neb., to William Henry and Ethel (East) Swanson. He had lived in Ames since 1953, and also had lived in Lincoln, Neb. He married Elsie (Jo) Hughes Feb. 25, 1953, in Denver, Colo. He was a design engineer in urban design at the Iowa Department of Transportation until he retired in 1986. He served in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of the Lancaster Masonic Lodge in Lincoln, Arcadia Lodge No. 249 in Ames, the Scottish Rite Consistory in Des Moines, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Temple, Story County Shrine Club, and American Legion and participated in various church activities.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie (Jo) of Ames; one son, J. Stewart Swanson (Carol) of Rochester, Minn.; and two grandsons, William and James.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Eugene Swanson.

Visitation will be from noon until service time Friday, Jan. 27, at First United Methodist Church.

Adams Funeral Home in Ames is handling the arrangements.

The family suggests memorials in lieu of flowers be directed to Shiner's Hospital for Crippled Children or First United Methodist Church in Ames.
