Richard Warren, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Warren of Cambridge, IA, died Sunday afternoon at Mary Greeley Hospital of a gunshot wound sustained Sunday morning in a hunting accident.

Warren was shot in the back of the head by a .22 cal. rifle while he and a companion were hunting rabbits west of Shipley. Russell Kahler, 19, also of Cambridge, said Warren shot at a jackrabgbit from a kneeling position and stood up just as Kahler shot. The bullet struck Warren in the back of the head.

Kahler told sheriff’s officers he ran to two farm houses to get help, but nobody was home. He said he then went back to the scene of the accident to get the car keys from Warren’s pocket. When he got to the car he hailed a passing motorist who summoned help.

Warren was taken to the Story County Hospital in Nevada, IA, and was transferred to Mary Greeley where he died about 4 p.m. Story County Sheriff, Ivan Shalley, said the shooting was an accident.

Funeral services for Warren will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Cambridge Methodist Church with the Rev. McClellen officiating. Burial will be in the Cambridge Cemetery. Ryan Funeral Home at Nevada is in charge of arrangements.

Warren, who was a student at Ballard community High School, is survived by his parents and three brothers, Mike, William and Stanley Warren.
