Mike Schmidt, 59, of Ames, died Thursday, Dec. 8, at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Memorial Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Dec. 12 at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Fred Lewis and the Rev. Larry Vallery officiating.
Mike was born Nov. 22, 1946, in Sidney, Neb. to Robert and Arlene (Passmore) Schmidt. He married Diana Swanson June 3, 1967, in Las Vegas. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1965. He graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in physical education and history/government. He was a facility and plant manager at ISU. After completing basic training in Great Lakes, Ill., where he earned the title of honorman of his company, he attended Builder's School and began combat training in Port Hueneme, Calif. with the Seabees unit MCB-9. One of the most significant influencing event in his life, he served in Vietnam at DaNang and I Corps as a combat construction builder from August 1966 to April 1967. Hunting and shooting have remained the greatest passions of his life. He was a lifetime member of Duck Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, Wild Turkey Federation, Quail Unlimited and Whitetails Unlimited.
He is survived by his wife, Diana Schmidt of Ames; one son, Rob Schmidt of Ames; one daughter, Suzette Schmidt of Ames; and two sisters, Barb (Kenneth) Busby of Huxley and Chris (Jeff) Shreck of Ames.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, at Adams Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the American Legion Post No. 37 for the Veteran's Memorial.
Adams Funeral Home in Ames is in charge of arrangements.
