THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, November 11, 2005.

Donald Dean Hearn passed away at his home on Wednesday, Nov. 9, surrounded by his loving family after a 4 1/2 year battle with cancer. Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, in the chapel of Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home in Fort Dodge and at 10 am. at Sacred Heart Church in Fort Dodge with Rev. Edward Girres officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Corpus Christi Cemetery with military graveside rites by the VFW Post 1856. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today at the funeral home, where there will be a vigil at 7 p.m.

Dean was born Oct. 29, 1932, in Fort Dodge and graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High School in 1951. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War in the 45th Signal Corp Division and at the time of his honorable discharge, he held the rank of Sergeant. After returning from the service, Dean was employed with George A. Hormel for 32 years, retiring in 1982. On Oct. 22, 1955, Dean married Catherine Maguire at Corpus Christi Church and later became a member of Sacred Heart Church.

Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Catherine; and his three children, Kim Hearn, Kelly Rathert and her husband Randy, Jeff Hearn and his wife Deb, all of Ames, and his cherished grandchildren, Ryan Rathert of Ankeny and Sarah Rathert Devens and husband Troy of Lakeville, Minn.; sister Dora Slagle and husband Tom of Fort Dodge; and several nieces and nephews. Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Sigrid (Johnson) Hearn; sister Bonnie and brother-in-law Gerald Fuller; brother Jim and sister-in-law Lucy Johnson; and brother, Virgil Hearn.

The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice of Fort Dodge and especially Sheila Helfey for her kind and compassionate care. The family also would like to thank Dr. Kevin Schminke and the family friends who were such support during Dean's illness.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in Dean's name to Hospice of Fort Dodge.
