Former Milford Township Woman Dies in Michigan
Funeral rites were held at Lake City, Mich., Sunday, Nov. 16, for Mrs. J. F. Stevens, 69, daughter of a pioneer Milford township family who died at Mercy hospital, Cadillac, Mich., Wednesday of last week.
The services were held at a funeral parlor in Lake City, with Rev. A. M. Smith in charge, and interment was in the cemetery at Lake City.
Mrs. Stevens, who as a girl was Uretta Jane Gilmore, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Gilmore, was well known in Milford and Nevada, where the family lived in later years.
Uretta Jane Stevens, daughter of William J. and Jerusha Gilmore, was born on June 9, 1872, northeast of Ames, the eldest of nine children. She received her early schooling at Ames and later attended a commercial college at Des Moines.
She was united in marriage to J. Frank Stevens at Ames July 13, 1892. To this union three sons were born, namely Sidney, Harold and Dwight. The family made their home near Nevada until the spring of 1903 when they moved to West Branch township in Missaukee county, Michigan, which has since been their home. Mr. Stevens preceded her in death on Oct. 7, 1932.
During the last ten winters Mrs. Stevens has resided in St. Cloud, Fla. She enjoyed very good health until four weeks ago when she was taken to the Mercy hospital at Cadillac, Mich., where she underwent an operation and died three weeks later on Nov. 12.
Mrs. Stevens was active in the Order of Eastern Stars, Grange, and other community organizations and activities.
She leaves to mourn her loss, three sons, Sidney of Lake City, Mich., Harold of Detroit, Mich., Dwight of White Cloud, Mich.; four brothers, Maines Gilmore of Portland, Ore, George Gilmore of Nevada, Prof. William J. Gilmore of Corvallis, Ore., Dr. E. A. Gilmore of Atchison, Kan.; two sisters, Mrs. Eva Burton of Minneapolis, Minn., Mrs. Kate Thompson of Marshall, Mich.; two grandsons and a host of other relatives and friends.
