Funeral Rites for George W. Eley Held at Zearing
Zearing, Mar. 4 -- George W. Ely [sic], 71, who died at his home here Thursday, was laid to rest in the Zearing cemetery Sunday afternoon after funeral rites at the Church of Christ of which he was a longtime active member, with his pastor, Rev. George Manning in charge.
Pallbearers were John Hoberland, Tom Lundy, Howard Wickham, Jess Abbey, Harry Wolford and Robert Comfort.
Honorary bearers were August Cerka, Nattie Norton, Etna Moore, W. H. Golly, Sr., A. L. Grimm and Frank Perry.
The men's quartette of the Church of Christ composed of Eldon Crain, Gordon Lundy, Dale Johnston and Doyle Tett sand several numbers, accompanied by Miss Jean Twentier at the piano. Miss Mardean Joyce played the funeral march.
Burial was made in the Zearing cemetery by the side of his two children who preceded him in death.
George W. Eley, son of Joseph and Lydia Kemmer Eley, was born near Mount Vernon, Ohio, on Dec. 6, 1868. As a child he came to Marshall county, Iowa, where he grew to manhood.
On November 10, 1893, he was united in marriage to Nora McCormack, also of Clemons. The following spring they moved to a farm southeast of Zearing. They lived here until 1928, when they retired and moved into Zearing.
The home was blessed with four children. Claude, the eldest son, died in 1916 at the age of 21 years, and a daughter, Lois, died in 1921 at the age of 11. Wilbur, who lives on the home farm near Zearing, and Avonelle, a teacher in the Marshalltown schools, mourn their father's passing.
Besides his wife and two children he leaves his brothers, Sam of Clemons, and Elmer of Denver, Colo., one half-brother, Martin Eley of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Lynn, Dunne, Wendell and Eleanor Eley. A sister, Mrs. W. A. Bryant, preceded her brother in death.
Mr. Eley was active in the life of his community. He was a member of the local school board for six years. At the time of his death he was serving on the board of trustees of Lincoln township which office he held for 25 years.
Mr. Eley was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. He was devoted to the interests of the local congregation where he served in many official ways including deaconship and trusteeship.
His death on Feb. 27, 1941, was caused by a heart attack. He had been ill only a few days and his death was a shock to both family and friends.

W. LaPlant, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Graves of Cedar Rapids.
