Former Story County War Veteran Buried at Marshalltown
Funeral services were held from St. Mary's Catholic church, Marshalltown, Wednesday morning for Charles West, Spanish-American War veteran, and former Story county resident.
Charles West, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles West, was born at the family home south of Nevada, January 13, 1878, and passed away at the Veterans' hospital in Des Moines, June 8, 1941. Death was due to a heart attack.
Charles grew to manhood in Story county. At the age of 20 years he enlisted in the U. S. army and served during the duration of the Spanish-American war, serving his country by foreign service in the Philippines.
At the close of the war he was united in marriage to Rose Meehan. They made their home in North Dakota and Montana for some years.
Due to Mr. West's failing health they returned to Iowa and for the past 10 years have made their home at the Iowa Soldiers' Home at Marshalltown.
On June 5, Mr. West was taken to the Veterans' hospital for treatment for a heart condition. Death came suddenly on Sunday morning.
Burial services were held from St. Mary's Catholic church in Marshalltown with a Requiem High Mass, Rt. Rev. Monsig. Wm. Leen officiating.
A firing squad of Spanish-American War veterans tendered him military tribute. Interment was in Riverside cemetery.
He is survived by his widow and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Wagner, and Mrs. Laura Weber, all of Marshalltown.
The late Rev. Edward Berdlage, pastor of the Catholic church at Gilbert at the time of his death, was a nephew of the deceased.
Among those from a distance attending the funeral were Mrs. J. Murphy, Oakdale, North Dak., Mrs. A. E. Murphy, Boone, and Philip Murphy and Mary Murphy of Colo.
