Funeral Rites Held Here Today for Joe Poorbaugh

Business paused in the stores, shops, offices and other downtown places in Nevada for an hour this afternoon during the funeral rites for Joe S. Poorbaugh, 44, local clothier, which were held at 9:30 at St. Patrick's Catholic church, of which he was a member.

The funeral mass for Mr. Poorbaugh, a World War veteran who died at the U. S. Veterans' hospital in Des Moines Friday evening, was in charge of his pastor, Rev. Fr. James Mahoney.

Members of Nevada Post No. 48, American Legion, and of the Nevada Rotary club, both of which he was an active member, attended the services in a body and the local Legion post furnished a firing squad to accompany the funeral party to Colfax to officiate at the military commitment service.

The church was filled with a large group of relatives and friends of the deceased. On Sunday, the Lilly Funeral Home, where the body lay in state, the bier banked with beautiful floral offerings as a tribute to the high esteem in which Mr. Poorbaugh, who had been engaged in business in Nevada for about three years, was held, was the setting in the evening for a rosary service attended by relatives and friends and led by Rev. Mahoney.

Such of the floral offerings as were not taken to Colfax to be placed upon the grave, were sent to the veterans' hospital in Des Moines, where the deceased had spent several months previous to his death.

Josiah S. Poorbaugh was born at Collins, Sept. 1, 1896, a son of Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Poorbaugh. There he was raised, enlisted in the U. S. Army and served in the American expeditionary forces during the World War.

He had served as sales representative for a Des Moines manufacturing concern for about 18 years and came to Nevada about three years ago and became identified as owner of a clothing store, being first associated in the business with Mr. Campbell as a partner, but for the past two years had been sole owner of the business.

He was married May 22, 1926, in Des Moines to Miss Beatrice McKeigh and she, with one sister, Mrs. Kathryn Poorbaugh-Graham of Des Moines, and other relatives, survives.

Casketbearers were Dan O'Roake of Valeria, Lew Heintz, H. E. Shaffer and Lloyd Child of Nevada and Lloyd Everett and Joseph Weresh of Des Moines.

The music was furnished by Mrs. H. E. Shaffer at the organ and her daughter, Miss Marvy Shaffer.
