Sherm T. Shaw Died Early Today; Funeral Sunday
Sherman T. Shaw, 74, prominent farmer and longtime resident of Story county, died at his farm home two miles southeast of Nevada early today, following a gradual decline of over a year and final illness of a week or so. Death resulted from a throat infection following various other complications.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at Memorial Lutheran church at 2 o'clock with his pastor Dr. J. O. Simon in charge. Burial will be in the Nevada cemetery by the side of the wife Mrs. Nettie Shaw, who passed away September 6, 1934.
Sherman Shaw was born in Indiana July 16, 1866, and came to Story county with his parents Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Shaw, when a small child. The family settled on a farm in Sherman township. There they lived for a number of years and it was while he was farming nearby the old home place that he was married to Miss Nettie Hague, and to this union five children were born, four of whom survive the parents.
A few years after their marriage Mr. Shaw bought the farm southeast of Nevada upon which he located his family and there the home had since been.
Of the five children born to Mr. and Mrs. Shaw, the eldest, Earle, died in September 1937. The daughter, Alta, had always been at home and since the passing of the mother had cared for the home and the father. The other children are Mrs. Hazel Clements of Des Moines, Donald Shaw of Marshalltown and Leslie Shaw of Des Moines. All were at home when the father passed away. He also leaves 8 grandchildren.
During his youth, he with other members of the family became affiliated with Lutheran church and since moving to Nevada he had been an active member of Memorial Lutheran church.
He was a good citizen, an excellent farmer and livestock man and was always known as one of the leaders in his community, active in public and civic affairs, serving as a member of the board of trustees and [the remainder lines are unreadable.]
