Phillip Theodore Pearson, 69, of Ames died of cancer Wednesday at Israel Family Hospice House there. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames, of which he was a member. Burial will be at Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Dr. Pearson was born in Story County and had lived in Boston, Mass., and Columbia, Mo., before moving to Ames in 1943. He was a veterinary orthopedic surgeon and dean of the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine for 17 years before retiring. He was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and American Association of Veterinary Clinicians, a past president and board chairman of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and a chairman of the Council of Deans of Colleges of Veterinary Medicine for the United States and Canada.
He had authored 40 scientific papers on veterinary medicine and was a recipient of the Riser Small Animal Award, Nordon Distinguished Teaching Award, Gaines Award and Medal, Iowa State University Outstanding Teacher Award and Iowa Veterinarian of the Year Award. He had received an Iowa State University Faculty Citation. He was a member and past president of the Ames Kiwanis club, a president of Cyclone Community Center, a co-chairman of Ames School Board Enrichment Fund and a member of the Mayor’s Senior Citizen Committee and Ames Bicycle Committee. He was active in running and a timer for running events at Ames High School. He enjoyed cross country skiing, swimming and camping.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane; two daughters, Jane Beeman of West Des Moines and Julie Utterback of Deerfield, Ill.; two sons, Bryan of West Des Moines and Todd of Winterset; and nine grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Adams Funeral Home in Ames. Memorial contributions may be made to his church or the William R. Bliss Cancer Center.
