OLIVER THOMPSON DIED SUDDENLY
Well Known Old Settler Passed Away While Sitting in the Jewell Hotel Lobby
Oliver Thompson, 65, died last Thursday afternoon while sitting in a chair in the lobby of the hotel in Jewell.
Death came suddenly and unawares, as he had been out a little while before playing and singing with the grandson of hotel proprietor.
Mr. Thompson was well known to the older generation here and around Roland. For some years he made his home alternately in Sioux City and Story City, having farm interests that sustained him. The past winter he had lived at the Jewell hotel. He had been in Story City briefly a couple days before he died.
He was a brother of the late Mrs. Nels Russell and Mr. Russell and his sons took charge of the body and the funeral. The funeral was held in Roland Monday afternoon, Rev. Holen officiating, and interment was made in the Roland cemetery.
Obituary
Oliver Thompson was born in Etne, Norway, Sept. 16, 1864. He emigrated with his parents to America and came to Story City in the year 1870, where his mother passed away the same year. He moved with his father on a farm 3 1/2 miles north of Roland, where he grew to manhood, and where he later farmed for himself.
He made his home in Sioux City for a good many years. He retired from work and came home to take care of his aged father, until his father passed away, and since then he has pent his time in Story City and Sioux City, until he came to Jewell in the fall of 1929 and remained there until he passed away very suddenly of acute dilation of the heart at the age of 65 years, 6 months and 4 days.
He was buried Monday, March 24, from Salem Lutheran church of Roland. Rev. Holen assisted by Rev. Paulsrud of Randall officiated. Mr. O. S. Boyd rendered two solos at the funeral. The pallbearers were: Nels Waugh, B. T. Holm, Gerhard Larson, Lars Stangeland, Henry Dole, Otis Olson. He leaves to mourn his death two nephews and one niece and numerous other relatives in Jewell, Roland and Story City.
Relatives sent $13 to Helping Hand Mission, Sioux City, $10 to the Lutheran Church Mission and $10 to the Lutheran Bible School at Minneapolis.
