OBITUARY
Harry T. Corbin
Harry T. Corbin was born near Harlan, Iowa, May 21, 1895, died "somewhere in France" April 22, 1918, aged 22 years, 11 months, 1 day. He came with his parents to Ames about eleven years ago, remaining here for three years ago, they moved to Algona but he only stayed there one year, coming back to Ames he made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Lew Cole, until his parents moved back four years ago last February. Since then he had made his home with them up until his enlistment.
He was a bricklayer by trade, having learned that trade here in Ames and was a member of the local union.
On the 9th day of May, 1917, he enlisted at Marshalltown, and was set to Omaha, Neb., for examination and was sent from there to Ft. Logan, Col., for training being transferred to Fort Bliss, Texas, going from there to Washington, D. C., in August of last year. His unit was in the great military parade held there on Labor Day. On Sept. 10, 1917, he sailed from New York harbor for France, as a member of the 2d engineers.
He had made his plans to be married to Miss Agnes Halleland of Story City, last summer, but the war situation caused them to change their plans and wait until after the war was over.
He leaves his fiancé, Miss Halleland; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry T. Corbin; one sister, Hazel; two brothers, Frank J. of Co. I, 168th infantry, A. E. F. in France and Andrew J., who is at home, besides other relatives to mourn for him.
He was a member of the I. O. O. F. and the Rebekah lodges, the Shamrock club and the Bricklayers union. He was a good, clean young man and one we do well to honor.
Let us then with Riley say:
"I cannot say, and will not say
That he is dead. He is just away!
With a cheery smile and wave of the hand
He has wandered into an unknown land.
Think of him faring on, as dear
In the love there, as the love of here."
