OBITUARY

Julia Reischauer Hollingsworth

The subject of this sketch was born at Ames, April 10, 1863 and died at her home at Ollie Tuesday, July 6th, at 5:45 a.m., aged fifty-two years, 2 months and twenty-six days. On Dec. 4, 1883 she was united in marriage to Pierce Hollingsworth and to this union four children were born, one dying in infancy; the surviving children are: J. F. Hollingsworth, Mrs. C. E. Pampel and Raymond Hollingsworth. She is survived by her aged mother, Mrs. J. F. Reischauer and the following brother and sisters: Mrs. Frank Bockwoldt, Stanhope; Mrs. A. M. Miller, Orilla; C. F. Reischauer, Story City; Mrs. Henry Kammin, Story City; and Mrs. Willard Grove, Jewell. Mrs. Hollingsworth had been ill for years, her affliction dating back to twenty-six years ago. But it did not develop into anything of a serious nature until last January. It became evident that she would have to submit to an operation in the hope of securing the desired relief. On February 6th she was taken to the Mercy Hospital at Des Moines and put under the surgeon's knife. The operation was successful but she was not benefitted thereby. Her case baffled the skill of the most eminent physicians. Everything possible was done to stay the ravages of the dread malady, but of no avail. And at the hour hertofore mentioned the sweet and gentle spirit of our beloved sister, unmoved, untouched and without a single struggle, whispered adieu to world's sinful follies and winged its flight to the portals of eternal bliss. Mrs. Hollingsworth was a devoted follower of the meek and lowly Jesus. At the age of sixteen she yielded herself to the tender embrace of Christ and united with the German Lutheran Church at Boone, later becoming a member of the Christian church at Hopewell, in which relationship he continued until the Lord called her home. In her character was beauty and strength. She was one of the sweetest and noblest spirits that the writer ever knew. She was a kind mother, a devoted sister, and a friend to all. She had bequeathed to her children an immortal heritage, and in the lives of those who were touched by the influence of her godly example she has written in large letters impressions that will never be erased, for many will rise up and call her blessed. She had wonderful faith, a strong abiding hope, and her Bible was her daily companion. During her long illness she found much comfort in reading it and in prayer. On April 6 she realized that she couldn't live and made arrangements for her funeral, requesting that the writer conduct the service and that her favorite songs be sung. She wanted to live for the good she might do others. Indeed, she was good Samaritan in every sense of the term, ministering to the sick and needy when her strength would hardly permit it, but her greatest joy was in serving others. It pained her to leave her children, but she was ready to go, and requested that they would not grieve over her, and that the angels were hovering near. Farewell, dear mother, sister, friend. We shall miss thee, but we hope to meet in the unbroken circle above. Thy kindly bearings and saintly steppings shall be no more. We wave adieu towards the grave. Farewell, dear one, farewell
E. V. Goad

Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist Church Thursday July 8 by Rev. E. V. Goad, assisted by Revs. E. M. Vance and E. L. Mills. Mr. Goad used as a text 1 Cor. 13:12, his theme being "The Mirror of Life." At the request of the deceased the choir sang "Face to Face," "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," and "Asleep in Jesus." Interment took place in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, there [in Martinsburg, Iowa] to await the dawn of resurrection.
