WICKS FUNERAL HELD SATURDAY

LAST RITES FOR H. T. WICKS, ROLAND PIONEER, HELD FROM BERGEN CHURCH

Another pioneer of this community has passed into the Great Beyond. H. T. Wicks, who has been ill for some time, passed away at his home in the east part of town on Wednesday evening last week. The funeral services were held from Bergen church last Saturday afternoon, his pastor, Rev. M. O. Sumstad, preaching the funeral sermon. A large concourse of friends and relatives were in attendance to pay their last respects to this esteemed citizen.

Hactor T. Wicks was born December 16, 1846, in Vika, Skaanevig's prestegjeld, Norway, his parents being Torger and Christi Wicks. He grew to manhood in Norway, and on April 3, 1870, he was united in marriage to Madala Wicks, Rev. Niman performing the ceremony. During the same spring he emigrated, together with his wife, to America, and settled down in Lisbon, Ill. They came to Iowa in 1875 and lived on a farm northeast of Roland until 1882 when they moved to a farm four and a half miles north of town. Here they farmed for 34 years, and eight years ago they retired from the farm and moved to Roland to spend their remaining years. Mr. Wicks was 77 years, six months, and 27 days old when called by death. He suffered a sun stroke shortly after coming to Iowa and has not been very strong since that time. He has been member of Bergen Lutheran church ever since he came to this community.

Mr. and Mrs. Wicks had ten children, two of which, Millie and Thomas, died in infancy. Those who are left with Mrs. Wicks to mourn the loss of a husband and father, are Mrs. Ben Borwick, Mrs. Andrew H. Twedt, Tom H. Wicks, Mrs. John Waage of Volga, S.D., Mrs. A. M. Christianson, J. E. Jacobson, Theo. W. Wicks, and Mrs. G. T. Halverson of Belmond. He also leaves 51 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, a brother, Nels T. Wicks, and two sisters, Mrs. Ole Norem of Radcliffe, and Mrs. M. E. Nerem. A brother, Severt Wicks, died several years ago.

Among those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and mrs. Knudt Munson, Mrs. Elias Olson, Miss Alma Wicks, and John Larson, of Clarion; Messrs and Mesdames Tome Wicks, Ole Norem, John Norem, and Selmer Norem, and Mr. Clarence Norem of Radcliffe; Mrs. John Wicks of Buckeye; Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Solbrack of Stanhope; Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Hill, Mrs. Anna Fatland, and Mr. Johanna Reisetter, of Cambridge; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Wicks of Eagle Grove, and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Egemo of Corwith.
