HANS HANSON, KNIGHT, REACHED HIGH AGE

Hans Hanson was born at Toksverd, Denmark, Feb. 21, 1838, and died at Story City March 1, 1929, at the age of 91 years and 27 days.

As a young man he served in the Danish army and because of this on June 5, 1927, the King of Denmark decorated him with the Dannebrog silver cross with the emblem of knighthood and the bronze medal commemorating his service n the war against Prussia in 1864. According to the rule of the Dannebrog order, this cross rested on his casket at the funeral and after the funeral it was returned to the King of Denmark, while the bronze medal will remain in the family.

Those who were with him that evening when he was elevated to knighthood in the Dannebrog order know how happy he was and how happy he was and how he appreciated the honor.

August 20, 1861, he was united in marriage to Carrie Marie Larson. Nine years later, in 1870, they immigrated to America, settling two miles south of Story City, where they lived 5 years. In 1875 they purchased a farm six miles west of Story City, where they made their home until 1897, when they moved to Story City. Mr. Hanson has had his home here since. His wife died in 1908.

In 1911 he was married the second time to Mrs. Mary Christensen of Story City. She preceded him in death March 18, 1923. The last few years his children, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew P. Hanson, have lived with him and given him good care during his declining years.

In his first marriage Mr. Hanson had four children. Of these, one, namely, Mrs. Enevoldson, has passed away. Those living are: Mrs. Matt of Boone, John B. Hanson of Fenton, and Andrew P. Hanson of Story City. He also leaves 18 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.

Mr. Hanson has for a number of years been a member of the Bethel Lutheran church, Story City. He attended services regularly and during his sickness his pastor saw him many times with tears in his eyes saying: "I do not think I will be able to go to church any more."

He was buried from his home and the Bethel church March 20. His pastor, Rev. G. O. Paulsrud, officiated, and Mrs. L. Henderson sang two appropriate solos. A great number of friends and relatives filled the church to pay their last respects to this brave son of Denmark.

Those present at the funeral from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Matt, Mr. Jas. Matt, Mr. and Mrs. Paul C. Kelly and daughters Katherine Jane and Rosemary, Mrs. M. D. Hogan and Mrs. M. Hagen of Boone, William R. Matt Jr. of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Hanson of Fenton, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Knudson and Mr. and Mrs. Hans Knudson of Jewell.
