From Story City Herald November 1, 1928 (page 1)

Charlotte Wier

Charlotte Wellington was born near the village of Wolcott in the State of New York, October 13, 1839. Died at Swan, Iowa, October 27, 1928, aged 89 years and 2 weeks old.

She was the daughter of Franklin B. and Mary Wellington, who, late in life came to Story City to make their home with the deceased.

On February 21, 1854, she was married to William A. Wier. To this union five boys were born, all of whom have preceded her in death, except William H. Wier of Swan, Iowa.

In 1856 William A. and Charlotte Wier emigrated to Story county, Iowa, landing at the farm of the Francis Wier in November. The next spring they moved to a little house on the present site of Story City. After this all the life of this family was lived in Story county except the time that the husband was in the army as a civil war soldier. During the time of the civil war mother Wier spent a year with her people in Wayne county, New York; and since old age, she has made her home with her son William H. Wier of Swan.

One brother survives her, namely J. A. Wellington of Tully, N.Y.

Charlotte Wier's life is the life of the pioneer wife and mother no more, no less. The stress of dire necessity, the lack of conveniences, neighbors and means of communication, the struggle for existence in a new country was hers. But she lived to see all these give way to a highly developed community of progressive people, a lovable place to live.

Funeral services were held in the Grace church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Fuller officiating. In reading the obituary he commented on the fact that Mrs. Wier had become a member of the local congregation in 1889 on confession of faith during the pastorate of his grandfather, Rev. J. F. Yerger, and that she had been the first president of the ladies aid society.

The pall bearers were: A. G. Larson, C. W. Wier, J. C. Johnson, Harry Wier, J. C. Jessen and Paul A. Olson. Interment was made at the Sheffield cemetery, southeast of town, where her husband and children lie buried.

Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Wier accompanied the body from Swan, Iowa, and they have asked the Herald to convey their heartfelt thanks for aid and sympathy extended them during the funeral of their beloved mother.
