Services Held for John Okland, 79

Funeral services for John E. Okland were held at the Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley on Monday, Apr. 12, at 2 p. m. In charge of the services was Rev. Marvin Nygaard. Mrs. Selmer Westvold sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Den Store Hvide Flok." Mrs. Jacob Lee served as organist.

Acting as pallbearers were nephews: Mahlon Johnson, Verlin Nordseth, Sterling Sprau, John Birkestrand, Clifford Birkestrand and Robert Pederson.

In charge of flowers were Mrs. Herb Reinertson and Mrs. Grant Olson.

Interment was at the Fjeldberg Cemetery. The Slater American Legion presented the family with the American flag.

Relatives and friends attending from a distance were from: Canton, Watertown, Hudson and Alcester, S. D.; Mable, Mankato and Hanska, Minn.; Skokie, Ill.; and Hawarden, Kensett, Forest City, Mason City, Nora Springs, Meservy, Council Bluffs, Waterloo and Belmond, Ia.

Obituary

John Emil Okland was born on a farm near Olen, Norway, on Oct. 29, 1892. His parents were Endre and Inger Okland. He passed away at Mary Greeley Hospital, Ames on Apr. 9, 1971, after a long illness.

On Mar. 11, 1924, he was united in marriage to Edith Helen Johnson of Hudson, S. D. To this union four sons and two daughters were born.

Survivors include his wife, Edith; four sons, Kenneth, Kelley; Marlowe, Dows; Stanley, Kelley; and Leo, Jewell; two daughters, Mrs. Lois Hove Boone; and Mrs. Dorothy Burger, Cedar Rapids; 13 grandchildren; and one brother, Rev. H. E. Okland, Forest City. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Nels of Fertile, Ia.; and two half-sisters in Norway.
