Last Rites Held for John Axel Gustafson
Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 10 at 2 p. m. at the Riis Funeral home for John Axel Gustafson, 79, who passed away at his farm northwest of Slater (rented by Len Wirth) on Nov. 7 following a heart attack.
Rev. Glen Drew, pastor of the Slater-Sheldahl Methodist Churches, officiated. The soloist, Mrs. Lester Becker, sang "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" and "The Lord Is My Shepherd" accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Oliver Newman.
Pallbearers were Orville Lee, Harold Crabtree, Robert Torgerson, Robert munson, Vern Carlson and Ferris George.
Interment was in the Slater Municipal Cemetery, south of town.
Obituary
John Axel Gustafson was born on Apr. 6, 1888 in Sweden, Europe. His parents were Albin and Caroline Gustafson. He came to America with his family when he was three years of age and they settled at Orion, Ill.
Mr. Gustafson was united in marriage with Mary V. Anderson on Dec. 13, 1913. To this union three sons were born. In 1919 they moved from Orion, Ill. to Woodward, Ia., and in 1933 moved to a farm near Kelley.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; three sons, Max R. of Perry, Ia., Russell C. of Slater and Merlin F. of Las Cruces, N. M.; and four grandchildren, Dean Gustafson (Max), Denise Gustafson (Russell) and Robert and Linda Gustafson (Merlin).
His parents, two sisters and a brother preceded him in death.
