Rites Sunday for John Gunderson

Funeral services for John Gunderson were held Sunday afternoon, April 2, at the Slater Methodist Church at 2 p. m. The officiating clergyman was Rev. Lewis Malmin of Des Moines, a long-time friend of Mr. Gunderson who stressed the need of being prepared against the brevity and uncertainty of this life. Rev. Malmin was also the soloist, singing a favorite of the deceased, "Den Store Hvide Flok Vi Se," first in Norwegian and then in the English translation. Mrs. Phil Rood served as organist. A congregational hymn, "Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross," closed the service.

Pallbearers were Milford Ryen, Phil Rood, Dr. Earl P. Smith, Kermit Granseth, Morrill Nervig and Ben Hokel.

The beautiful floral tributes were cared for by Mrs. Kermit Granseth, Mrs. Morrill Nervig and Mrs. Milford Ryen.

Interment was made in Slater Municipal Cemetery.

Obituary

John Gunderson, son of Gunder and Sere Caltvedt, was born June 7, 1895 in Stavanger, Norway. He died at his home in Slater from a heart attack on Thursday, Mar. 30, 1967.

He came to this country in 1912 and settled in Story County.

He was married to Doris R. Anderson on May 5, 1920 at Spencer, Ia. Mr. and Mrs. Gunderson made their home in Slater about 40 years. Mr. Gunderson was engaged in the oil business in Slater much of that time and for eight years they lived in Waukee where they were in the oil business and also had a restaurant.

Mr. Gunderson was a member of the Slater Methodist Church and the Slater Community Club and was active in both church and community activities as long as his health permitted.

He is survived by his wife, Doris; one daughter, Mrs. Clyde (Joyce) Anderson of Des Moines; one grandson, Kent; one brother, Sigvart Gunderson of Stavanger, Norway; two sisters, Mrs. Gunvor Caltvedt of Ordahl, Norway and Mrs. Johanna Eastby of Brooklyn, N. Y.; many nieces and nephews and also a host of friends.

Relatives who came from Marshalltown, McCallsburg, and Jewell and friends from Des Moines, Grimes, Nevada and Ames were served dinner before the services by the members of the Slater Garden and Study Club.
