Dr. Gerald Dean Trullinger died Friday, Sept. 30, at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center surrounded by his caring and loving family, and the care of Iowa River Hospice.

Jerry was born May 7, 1933, in Farragut, to Isaac and Dorris (Jordan) Trullinger. He graduated from Farragut High School May 1951, and earned a pilots license at the age of 17. He played football and basketball at Peru State Teachers College in Peru, Neb., graduating with a B.S. degree in 1956. He received a master's degree from the University of Missouri at Maryville in 1964. He earned a Ph.D. in educational administration from Iowa State University in 1974. He taught graduate classes in education administration at Iowa State University.

He served in the U.S. Army as a corporal during the Korean Conflict. In later years, he was a member of the Civil Air Patrol.
He was a teacher and coach in Stanton for two years. In 1958, he transferred to Clarinda. He became principal in 1964. He moved to Marshalltown in 1970 to become principal at Lenihan Junior High School. He was assistant superintendent in Marshalltown in 1975-90. In 1990, he went to East Marshall as superintendent of schools. He retired from there in 1993. In September 1994 through June 1999, he was interim superintendent at Green Mountain-Garwin School District.

He married his high school sweetheart Loretta Lynn Bartles on Nov. 27, 1952, at Congregational Church in Farragut. To this union came three children Mark, Carmi, and Jeri Ann, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Jerry was an active member of Hope United Methodist Church. He co-chaired the building of the new sanctuary, which was completed in the spring of 2004. He was an active member of V.F.W American legion, served on the board of directors of Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce, was division vice president of the Chamber, charter president of Area Council on Child Abuse and Neglect, served on the Big Brothers Big Sisters Board, was a past president of Matins Kiwanis and served on the advisory board of the Salvation Army.

He loved life and his family very much. He especially enjoyed his years at the lake house fishing and boating with his dear family. He also enjoyed golfing and watching ISU football! His favorite pastime was watching his grandchildren grow up and participate in their sports.

Left to mourn his loss is his best friend and loving wife, Loretta, and their three children, Mark, Carmi and Jeri Ann. Mark and Ann Trullinger are from Manning, Norm and Carmi Olson of Nevada and Jeri and Perry Meyer of Waukee; his eight grandchildren, Mark Jr. and Megan Trullinger, Camron, Lindi and Kalli Olson, and Matthew, Ryan and Emily Meyer; four great grandchildren, Mark III and Lance Trullinger, and Jaydon and Bailey Cantrell; his mother Dorris of Farragut, one sister Faye (James) Bredensteiner, also of Farragut; three sisters-in law, Liva Eitzen of Marshalltown, Lila Latta of Bedford, Texas, and Alice Trullinger of Marco Island, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

In death, he has rejoined his father Isaac and brother Leonard.

Memorial services and celebration of his life will be at11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at Hope United Methodist Church with the Rev. Scott Lothe officiating. Burial of the cremains, with military rites conducted by the VFW Post No. 839, will be in Riverside Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 tonight at the church. Memorials may be directed to Iowa River Hospice, Hope United Methodist Church, and the Animal Rescue League.
