“HAROLD L. GARDNER – Harold L. Gardner, eldest son of Charles and Maude See Gardner, was born on August 22, 1922 at Maxwell, Iowa. He died at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines on Friday, May 28, 1965, at the age of 42 years. Harold, better known as Jack, grew to manhood around the Maxwell community. In 1942 he entered the service of his country, serving in the Army. He saw action in the North African campaign and the Italian campaign. On the 16h of July, 1944, he was wounded in action by a mortar shell fragment. He was awarded the Purple Heart medal for this wound and was discharged from the Army in December of 1944. He is survived by his mother, Maude; four sisters, Mrs. Lucille Campbell, Nevada; Mrs. Bernice Alder, Mrs. Kathryn Henningsen and Mrs. Martha O’Neil, all of Council bluffs, Iowa. Eight brothers also survive. They are: Dale, Maxwell; Kenneth and Larry, Phoenixville, Pa.; Willis, Cambridge; Richard, Bellville, Ill.; Wayne and James, Council Bluffs and Donald of Nevada. Several nieces, and nephews and a host of friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his father in 1955 and his twin brother, who died in infancy. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 1, at 1:30 p.m., at Coopers Funeral Home, with Rev. J. E. McClellan in charge. Mrs. Alice Gooden, accompanied by Mrs. Madeline Summitt at the organ sang, “The Old Rugged Cross” and “In the Garden.” The floral tributes were in charge of Mrs. Esther Brown and Mrs. Lois Aldrich. Casket bearers were John Fish, Dale Pyle, Robert Kirk, Harold Ballard, Glen Huggins and Russell Sparks. Burial was in the Peoria Cemetery, with Military Rites in charge of the Maxwell V. F.
