Last Rites Held Here For Andrew Maland

Last rites were held Saturday afternoon for Andrew Maland, former Slater publisher and postmaster. He was 82 years of age.

A short prayer service was held for relatives and close friends at the Riis Funeral Home at 1:30 p. m., followed by the service at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church at 2 p. m. The Rev. Leo O. Bjorlie was in charge of the services.

Pastor E. R. Rorem of Story City spoke briefly of his long friendship with the deceased.

Pastor Bjorlie chose his text from Hebrews 11:8-12 on Abraham's faith and how it led him to a land of promise.

Mrs. Arlene Burgess sang two hymns, "Rock of Ages" and "Abide With Me." Mrs. Oliver Newman was the organist.

The beautiful floral tributes were arranged by Mrs. Lester Nelson, Sr. and Mrs. Stanley Mosey. There were many memorial gifts to worthy causes.

Pallbearers were H. J. Carlson, Clarence Ryg, E. C. Rood, John Gunderson, Roy Cole and Dr. Geo. J. Severson.

Interment was in the Slater Cemetery, south of town.

Obituary

Andrew Maland, son of Ingeborg and John Maland, was born in Palestine Township on Jan. 19, 1874. He was baptized and confirmed in the Palestine Lutheran Church.

Mr. Maland attended school at Iowa State Teachers College and taught school at Huxley for awhile.

In 1900 he was united in marriage to Miss Bessie Wald and to this union two children were born, Ella and Obert.

Mr. Maland was associated with Osmund Viland in the furniture and undertaking business for a time. Later he became owner and publisher of The Slater News and was postmaster at Slater. He published the News for more than 35 years. In 1939 he sold out the Phil Rood, the present publisher.

He was a long-time member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Mr. Maland was active in civic affairs. He was a charter member of the Slater Commercial Club (the name was later changed to the Slater Community Club) and served as secretary of that organization for a number of years. He was town clerk for many years and also served a two-year term as mayor. He was an active member of the I. O. O. F. for many years.

Mr. Maland was an ardent fisherman and made many trips to Minnesota where he enjoyed his favorite sport.

When his health began to fail he became a resident of the Sunset home at Story City where he fell and broke his hip awhile back. He passed away at a nursing home in Nevada on June 27 at the age of 82 years, 5 months and 8 days.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie, and his daughter, Ella; five brothers, John, Ole, Sam, Elias and Martin, and two sisters, Lizzie and Martha.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Obert Maland, two granddaughters Betty and Marie and one great-grandson, Brian, all of Minneapolis; and a sister, Anna Tesdall, of Cambridge.
