Last Rites Held for Mrs. H. W. Marshall

Funeral services for Mrs. H. W. Marshall were held Friday afternoon at 1:30 in the Riis Funeral home and at 2 o'clock in the Methodist church. Rev. Fred Martin of Yale, Ia., former pastor here, and Rev. Herbert Phillips were in charge of the service.

Homer Lewis sang two solos, "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "Sunrise Tomorrow." He was accompanied at the piano by Miss Marlys Daggett.

Mrs. John Gunderson and Mrs. Robert Munson were in charge of the many beautiful floral offerings. There were also a number of gifts of money for worthy causes in memory of Mrs. Marshall.

Casket bearers were Nels Sabo, E. C. Rood, Dr. R. G. Nott, John Hermann, Dr. Earl Smith and Phil Rood.

Interment was in the Slater cemetery.

Bessie Rice Marshall was born on Mar. 29, 1881 at Pleasantville, Ia.

On May 22, 1901, she was united in marriage to H. W. Marshall, and to this union three children were born: Herbert of Dallas, Tex., Mildred of Pontiac, Mich. and Ralph of Chicago.

Mrs. Marshall's health began failing several years ago and after submitting to major surgery two years ago she failed gradually until she passed away on Tuesday, Apr. 28, at the age of 72 years. She had been a resident of Slater for 38 years.

Mrs. Marshall was a life-long member of the Methodist church. As long as her health permitted she attended church regularly. She was active in the Women's Society of Christian Service of the Methodist church, having served as president for three years and during that time her health was failing. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, J. F. club, Garden and Study club and Rebekah lodge.

She was generous with her time in assisting in any worthy enterprise and was always willing to help when called on. Her sunny smile and pleasing personality son her many friends who will recall her in fond memory as the years roll by.

Surviving are the husband and three children, Herbert, Mildred and Ralph; three grandchildren, Virginia Lee and Carol May Marshall of Dallas, Tex., and Bruce Marshall of Chicago; a sister, Mrs. I. E. Morrical, of Los Angeles; four half-brothers, Oral Bassett of Milan, Mish., Walter Niefert of Los Angeles and George and Arthur Bassett of Knoxville, Ia.
