MARY BASSETT
Mary N. Gibbs was born in Hastings, New York, December 29, 1841, and died October 13, 1935, attaining as age of 93 years, 9 months and 13 days. Her parents were Leonard and Hannah Gibbs. They moved to Chicago in 1845. Later on they moved Polo, Illinois, where she grew to womanhood. Her marriage to Charles Osborne Bassett took place December 25, 1867.
In 1877 they moved to Iowa, taking up their residence in Garden township, northwest of Slater. Leaving the farm in 1891, they moved to Slater, where they established their home and lived for over thirty years. Following the death of Mr. Bassett in 1921. Mrs. Bassett had been making her home with a daughter, Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Graves, most of the time.
Eight children were born to the Bassetts. Of them four are dead. Those surviving her are: Cecie Croft of Adel, Mrs. Amanda Frundle and Mrs. H. D. Graves of Madrid and Guy L. Bassett of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Slater people will remember Mrs. Bassett as a kind and considerate neighbor and friend. She was a member of the Slater M. E. church and took and active interest in its activities during her long Slater residence. She had many friends who held her in the highest esteem.
