THE PASSING OF A TRUE, SWEET LIFE
Obituary of Mrs. W. N Shannon*, Who was Interred Yesterday.
Special to the JOURNAL.
AMES, June 20.--The following obituary of Mrs. W. N. Shannon was read at her funeral which took place yesterday morning at ten o'clock at the M.E. church being conducted by the pastor, Rev. A. M. Shea:"Elsie Gunsaulus Shannon, daughter of G. W. and Rachel Gunsaulus, was born in Tewanda, McKain ocunty, Ill., Dec. 16, 1858, and died at her home in Ames, Sunday, June 17, 1906. She was united in marriage to W. N. Shannon* at Money Creek, Ill., Aug. 5, 1883, by A. B. Dodson. Four children, Earl C., Mabel I., Inez Pearl, and Wilfred Roy came to cheer their hearts and bless their home, all of whom live to suffer the pangs of this separation, save little Wilfred who preceded his mother to the better land. The deceased was converted as a revival meeting held in the United Brethren church when she was but 12 years of age. The constant fruitage of singularly consistent and beautiful life is ample evidence of the genuineness of her experience as well as of the fidelity with which her Christian obligations were discharged. Modest and unassuming, gentle, sympathetic, counting not her life unto herself she exemplified the spirit of her Master in holy ministry to the welfare of others. The 12 long weary weeks of suffering, during which she lingered on the borders of Beulah land, brightened her hope and strength and her faith. Mother's parting words to those she loved best will linger with the members of this bereaved family as the sweetness of the song long after the singer has ceased to sing. The days of separation will come to an end and if faithful to God we will join in the new song of the militant church in the city of our King. The deceased leaves father and mother, two brothers, two sisters, a husband, son, two daughters and a step daughter." The body was laid to rest in the Ames cemetery.
* SUBMITTER'S NOTE: Ellen Ella "Elsie" Gunsaulus was married to William Elmer Shannon, not W. N. Shannon as stated.
