GILBERT PIONEER CALLED BY DEATH

L. OLIVER, 78-CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIED THURSDAY AFTERNOON.

Gilbert, Oct. 31--L. Oliver, 78, Civil war veteran and one of the pioneers of the county, died at his home in Gilbert Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock, after an illness dating back to last May.

Funeral services will be held from the Congregational church of Gilbert, of which he was a charter member, Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, after which interment was in the Gilbert cemetery.

He leaves his wife, a faithful live companion, and one son, Dr. Oliver of Graceville, Minn. The only daughter, Mrs. Johnson, died a few months ago.

After serving throughout the Civil war as a member in the 153d Illinois infantry, he came out to Story county in 1869 and located first on a farm southeast of Gilbert where he lived until 1890 when he moved into Gilbert and engaged in the lumber business. He continued in active business until a few years ago when he retired.

The death of Mr. Oliver leaves his old comrades Crouthamel and Gasaway, as the sole survivors of the great struggle of the "sixties" in the Gilbert neighborhood.

Mr. Oliver had always been more or less active in political affairs and had a wide acquaintance over the county.

He was a charter member of the Congregational church and always took a very active interest in religious affairs.
