Funeral Services Held Sunday for Mrs. Rachel Elzy
Funeral services for Mrs. Rachel Elzy, 78, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jesse McWherter, south Nevada Friday, were held Sunday afternoon at the Bishop Funeral home with Rev. C. E. Lookingbill in charge. The songs were by Mrs. Lough and Mrs. Jacobs, with Mrs. Dobson at the piano.
Following the services here the body was taken to the Collins cemetery where the commitment was attended by a large circle of old neighbors and friends.
Rachel Elzy, daughter of Ike and Elmire Berry, was born in McLain county, Illinois September 1, 1858, where she grew to womanhood. On December 14, 1873, she was united in marriage to Richard James McClees in Illinois. To this union were born seven children; two children, one son and one daughter, preceeding her in death, both dying in infancy.
After the marriage, they moved to Iowa and made their home for some time here in Iowa, and later the family moved to Nebraska. On January 22, 1916, her husband preceeded her in death while living in Nebraska.
In May 1924 she was united in marriage to Charles Elzy. Mr. Elzy died at Spirit Lake on October 12, 1927. Mrs. Elzy passed away on October 2nd, 1936 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jesse McWherter, south of Nevada at the age of 78 years, one month. She leaves to mourn her death her children, living, Clara Gentry of Norfolk, Nebraska; John McClees of Kelso, Washington; and Phoebe McWherter of Nevada, Iowa; 18 grandchildren, and 21 great grandchildren and other relatives and a host of friends.
Mrs. Elzy united with the M. E. church in childhood and lived faithful until her death.
She was a kind and loving mother, a good neighbor and loved by all who knew her.
