RHODES WOMAN DIES

Mrs. Mary Kitchen Succumbs to Infirmities of Age

Mrs. Mary Kitchen, one of the older residents of Eden township died at 3:30 this morning (December 18, 1926 /H/) at her home in Rhodes of infirmities of old age, after several months of ill health.

Mrs. Kitchen was born Jan. 4, 1833 near Mount Vernon, OH and at the age of ten moved with her parents who settled near Kendallville, Ind. Her father was Henry Grubb, the third white settler in Wayne township, Noble county, Indiana. She was married at Kendallville to John Beard and in 1855 she and her husband came to Iowa, driving overland by team, stopping at Des Moines then Fort Des Moines. Mr. Beard was engaged in freighting and hauled shipments to the nearest railway then at Iowa City. In 1857 Mr. and Mrs. Beard moved to Collins township, Story County, where Mr. Beard farmed. Four years later Mr. Beard died, leaving her with two children . In 1861 she married Wilson C. Fish and moved to Peoria, where Mr. Fish died in 1877. Mrs. Fish married Robert Kitchen in 1880, and they came to Rhodes in 1881, where Mr. Kitchen died in 1899.

Mrs. Kitchen is survived by six children: Mrs. Amanda (Beard) Richmond, Rhodes; W. H. Beard and Mrs. Luella (Fish) Watson, who lived with mr.s Kitchen at Rhodes; W. W. Fish, Ames; Frank L. Fish, Cambridge, and Mrs. J. E. (Minerva Fish) Scott, Nenzel, Neb. She is also survived by two step-sons, and three step-daughters, children of Mr. Fish, who live near Collins.

Mrs. Kitchen had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church at Rhodes since it was first organized and is also a member of Crystal Chapter, No., 11. O.E.S. of Rhodes.

The funeral will be at 10:30 o’clock Monday at the Methodist church, with Rev. W. A. Faris, pastor of that church in charge. burial will be in the Peoria cemetery, south of Collins.
