Charles H. Menzel
On last Thursday, Sept. 2, at 6:30, another one of Warren township's oldest and most respected settlers passed to his reward. Charles H. Menzel was a native of Folkenberg, Germany, where he was born ono July 4, 1832, and died, as stated, on September 2, 1920, aged 88 years, 1 month and 28 days. On November 15, 1857, he was united in marriage to Amelie Richter, and to them were born six children. Of these the oldest died at the age of nine months. All the others are still living and are: F. F. Menzel, McCallsburg; C. H. Menzel, Nevada; Mrs. Johnston Irvine, Marshall Co.; Mrs. A. L. Dayton, Nevada; Mrs. L. H. Bakka, McCallsburg. Nineteen grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren survive him. His wife died ----- ---- 1916.
Mr. Menzel [the center of this paragraph is unreadable] From 1871 to 1901 he lived on a farm in the southern part of Warren township; in 1901-1906 in Zearing an from 1906 till the present in the present home in McCallsburg.
He learned the cabinet maker's trade in youth and continued in the occupation until coming to Iowa. While living at Freeport, Ill., he united with the I. O. O. F. lodge of that place. When a boy he was confirmed in the German Lutheran church.
The funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, in charge of Rev. Ray, after which interment was made in the cemetery here by the side of his wife who preceded him four years.
Since the death of his wife he has been living in his own home, with the exception of a few weeks at a time when he visited his daughter, Mrs. Dayton, at Nevada, and has been cared for by his daughter until his last illness of about six weeks, which was due to the infirmities incident to old age, during which time all of his children have assisted in caring for him. The family has the sympathy of the community in this, their bereavement.
