Mary Elizabeth McLane [should be McClain], a daughter of John Ira and Rachel Grandy was born December 17, 1853 near St. Charles, Kane county, Illinois, being the youngest of three children.

She passed away Monday, January 9, 1939, at the home of her brother, H. A. Grandy where she had been cared for in her illness, at the age of 85 years and 22 days.

She grew to womanhood in Illinois and came to Iowa in 1880 with her father and brother, H. A. Grandy, in a covered wagon drawn by an oxen team. They located in this community before Zearing was a town, their home being the third established in the settlement.

After the death of her husband and son, a brother, George made his home with her, passing away November 10, 1931. A niece, Elizabeth Grandy now Mrs. Leland Parsons was raised in her home and had been to her and the brother George as an own child.

She was a member of the Church of Christ of Zearing. A member of the Royal Neighbors and Rebekah lodges and the Zearing Chapter No. 237, Order of the Eastern Star.

After the death of her mother, her father married a second time and three children were born to this union. Of this group the half brother, H. A. Grandy survives.

Later after the death of the second wife, Mr. Grandy married a third time and six children were born. Four of this group survive they being two half brothers, Will of Pine Hurst, Washington; Samuel of Chicago, Ill., and a half sister, Mrs. Katie Vossem of Pertz, Minnesota.

She is also survived by two nephews, Hugh Grandy of Joseph, Oregon, George Grandy of Zearing, Ia.; two nieces Mrs. Elizabeth Parsons, State Center, Ia.; and Miss Leafa Belle Grandy of Zearing and many other relatives and friends.

Relatives and friends from a distance attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Leland Parsons and children of State Center; Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Heintz and daughter of Collins, Mr. and Mrs. Alva Parsons and Mrs. Ella Parsons of State Center.
