Zearing Woman Born In Iowa In Territorial Days

Mrs. Armstrong Pioneer Dead; Funeral Sunday

Special to the Journal.
Zearing, March 9--Mrs. Malvina H. Armstrong, 92, a resident of Iowa since its territorial days, and for over half a century a resident of the zearing neighborhood, died at her home here late Friday, following a brief illness.

Following a period of invalidism of over thirty years, Mrs. Armstrong had regained her health and during the past several years had been active and able to take an interest in the affairs of her church an her home. She had been ill this time but about three weeks and her condition was thought to be serious but since Tuesday.

Born in Keokuk county, Iowa, June 19, 1832, she came with her parents to Hardin county when a small child and the family home was located in the Honey Creek church neighborhood in the southeastern part of that county.

She was united in marriage to Bennet A. Armstrong, a young Civil war veteran, on March 7 1866.

In the spring of 1870 they moved into Liscomb where Mr. Armstrong engaged in the merchantile business for 16 years.

It was in 1886 that they came to Zearing and here her home had been continuously since, with the exception of about four years when their home was in Ames, where the husband conducted a private bank.

Both she and Mr. Armstrong were active members of the Church of Christ, and while her invalidism kept her from active church work for a long period of time, her rather remarkable recovery renewed that opportunity for service which she readily accepted.

Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong. Two died in infancy an one son, Dr. Frank T. Armstrong died in Estherville in 1914. The husband long recognized as one of the responsible and active citizens of this neighborhood, died on March 21, 1919.

She is survived by one son, Jesse L. Armstrong of Zearing and daughters Mrs. Leona Perry of Zearing and Mrs. Nettie Delano of Los Angeles. She also leaves 9 grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

The funeral services will be held at the Church of Christ in Zearing Sunday afternoon at 2:30 after which the body will be laid to rest in the Zearing cemetery by the side of the husband. The service will be in charge of her pastor, Rev. Kenneth Tuttle of the Zearing Church of Christ.
