Funeral Services for Gilbert Pioneer
Gilbert, March 5--Funeral services for James Albert Gibson who passed away at midnight Wednesday were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Gilbert Congregational church. The pastor, Rev. J. P. Himmel had charge of the service. He used as his text, The Acts 17th Chapter, first part of the 28th verse, "For in Him We Live and Move, and Have Our Being."
A quartet composed of Ralph Hillis, B. D. Kent, Clate Manges and A. L. Dickinson sang "The Old Rugged Cross," "Beautiful Land" and "No Disappointment in Heaven" accompanied by Miss Della Hamilton at the piano.
There were many beautiful floral offerings and were cared for by Mrs. B. D. Kent, Mrs. J. H. Reynolds and Mrs. Fred Anderson. Interment was in the Gilbert cemetery the pallbearers were Charlie Hanneman, A. J. Graham, Virgil Rainbolt, C. E. Read, Bert Rainbolt and Fred Anderson.
James Albert Gibson was born in Marshall county, Iowa on June 27, 1862 and passed away at his home in Gilbert February 28, 1935, at the age of 72 years, eight months and three days. He came to Story county with his parents at the age of about three years. Mr. Gibson was the last of the family to pass away, his parents, two sisters and two brothers having preceded him in death.
He was untied in marriage to Millie Cox on October 28, 1886 at Boone. They settled on their farm three miles west of Gilbert. To this union were born three sons and five daughters, Oscar David and Charles, Mrs. Ira Brown, Mrs. Hans Hanson, Mrs. Ed Inglesby and Mrs. Reuben Benn. All of whom at present live in the immediate vicinity. They lived on this farm until their children were in homes of their own then moved to Gilbert nine years ago.
His children and one niece Mrs. Leora Bennett are the only remaining ones of this pioneer family who came here with the early settlers. Mr. Gibson was a home loving man never caring for public life. His live was ruled by the thought that to have a friend was to be one and at all times practiced The Golden Rule.
With his passing, the community looses a sterling character, and voted substantial citizen.
Relatives here from a distance to attend the funeral of Mr. Gibson were Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Wright of Des Moines, Mrs. F. S. Parker, Sibley, Mr. Wm. Cox, Roy and Ray Noble of Ocheyedan, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Farmer of Storm Lake, Mrs. Della McCracken, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur McCracken and Mrs. Allie Patterson of Boone, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Jacobs of Story City, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Handsaker, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Handsaker, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gerlach and Mrs. Harold Handsaker, all of Fernald and a number of friends from Ames, Boone and Story City.
