AdelLeona Walker, 97, passed from this life on February 3, 2012 at Legacy Point in Waukee. Leona was born August 8, 1914 in Canton, MO to Mark Edward and Clara (Kirscher) Daugherty. She graduated from Adel High School in 1932, with a normal training teacher's certificate and taught at several country schools in Dallas County. In 1936 she married Jasper J. Walker and they farmed for several years. Leona earned degrees for Life Certificates for the states of California and Colorado. She lived in Africa for four years, Hati for two years, and traveled extensively to the Middle East and Europe. Leona returned to teach in San Jose, CA until her retirement in 1977. She moved to Adel to be closer to her family. In her retirement she enjoyed private tutoring, volunteering, Garden Club, traveling, and entertaining family and friends.
She is survived by her brother, Gene Daugherty of Adel. Leona is preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Forrest "Jiggs", Francis, Leo, and Darrell; two sister, Zelda Melton and Arlene Piatt.
Leona's body was donated to the University of Iowa and no services are planned at this time. Memorial contributions may be directed to ADM Schools or the Adel Public Library. McCalley Funeral Home in Adel is handling the arrangements.
