Funeral Services Held at Kelley for Sigurd Severson

Kelley, May 17--Funeral services for Sigurd J. Severson, 69, were held Sunday afternoon, May 14 at 2:30 o'clock, in the Bethany Lutheran church of Kelley, with Rev. P. E. Onstad in charge. Two solos, one a Norwegian hymn and the other "Jesus Saviour Pilot Me," were sung by Miss Mae Ford, of Ames, accompanied on the piano by Mrs. L. W. Johnson. There were many beautiful floral tributes. Burial was in the Bethany cemetery, where an impressive ceremony was conducted by members of the I.O.O.F. lodge. The pall bearers were Walter Swanson, Mark Burr, Clarence Riggs, Burnice Holland, Virgil Johnson and Everett Swanson.

Sigurd J. Severson was born in Bergen, Norway, on July 8, 1875, and died in the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines, Thursday, May 11, at the age of 68 years, 10 months and 3 days. His early years were spent in Norway, where on December 26, 1895, he was united in marriage to Gertrude Olson, also of Bergen. To this union were born four children. Two daughters, Alma Matilda and Sylvia Gladys preceded their father death. He leaves to mourn his departure, his widow, two sons, Carl and Albert, both of Kelley, and one sister, Mrs. Kate Saxey [should be Sexy.]

In 1902, Mr. Severson, with his family came to the United States and located in Kelley where he resided until he became ill and was taken to the hospital, seven weeks ago. He had been employed by the Chicago, Northwestern Railroad Company since his arrival in this country, and had served as section foreman for many years, until recently, when due to ill health, he was forced to give up his work. Mr. Severson was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, in Norway, and was at the present time, a member of the Bethany Lutheran church of Kelley. He was also a longtime member of the I.O.O.F. lodge. Always interested in civic affairs, he served as city councilman for many years.

Mr. Severson was a good neighbor and a kind and devoted husband and father, and will be greatly missed by his family and by his many friends.
