GAMBLE, VERN ROY

THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, May 9, 1907, page 1, column 2. "OBITUARY - Vern Roy Gamble was born on August 15, 1881 and died at his home, Tuesday, May 7, 1907, aged twenty-five years, seven months and twenty-two days. He was the son of J. H. and Clara Gamble and grew to manhood on his father's farm, two miles west of Maxwell. Seven short years ago he was regarded as one of the strongest young men in the country, but four years ago while working with a hay baler, an accident, probably aggrevated** and encouraged by his abiding sorrow, for the loss of his mother, who had died three years previously, his health began to fail. Everything possible was done for him without avail. A trip to the west did not benefit him, neither did an operation for appendicitis reach the cause, for the dread "white plague" had fastened itself upon him and could not be shaken off. He fought against the disease with a conviction that he could never be well again, which weakened the effort on his part. He continually grew worse until February when he took to his bed and remained there until dissolution took place Tuesday morning. Vern made a profession of his faith in Christ as his Savior and united with the Presbyterian church at Maxwell, June 21, 1903, and throughout his illness his greatest regret was that he had not always been true to his Master, but the last months of his life were devoted to communion with his Savior and were a source of joy alike to himself and to everyone with whom he came in contact. It was on a Thursday night in Au **Editorial note - spelling used is from the original newspaper article.
