THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, July 26, 1900, page 5, column 4. "OBITUARY - Clara Maxwell-Gamble was born at Iowa Center, Iowa, November 3, 1858, and died at her home west of town, July 21, 1900, aged 42 years, 4 months and 11 days. Death stalks boldly through our land and lays his paralyzing hand upon whomsoever he choses.** Maxwell has again been called upon to mourn the loss of one of her good citizens, a lady born in this vicinity and who has watched the growth of our town from its foundation with the fondness of a mother for her first born. Clara Maxwell was born at Iowa Center, November 3, 1858, and grew to voluptuous womanhood in that town. She was of a kindly disposition and her circle of acquaintances were numerous, and J. H. Gamble was considered a lucky man when he was united in matrimony to her March 7, 1878. The enjoyment of their married life has always been perfect, and to the union was born four children, one daughter, Vera, and three sons, Verne, Van and George, all of whom remain to comfort the father in his affliction. Mrs. Gamble was converted and joined the C. P. church in Maxwell, March 23, 1889, and remained a consistent member until the day of her death. There is no human pleasure so sweet but what the bitter dregs are soon reached, and it was in this happy family. For some time the mother had been a dire sufferer and recently the disease had developed into appendicitis, a scourge that permits but short life, and the only hopes were from an operation which was performed last week, but the delicate frame could not withstand the shock, and on Saturday, July 21, 1900, she passed into life where suffering is unknown. Her death cast a gloom over the entire community who sympathize with the family in their loss. The funeral was held from the C. P. church Monday of this week and was one of the largest gatherings of mournful relatives and friends that have congregated therein for many months. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, and all endeavored to show appreciation of a true woman's character. Messrs. Dan John, John Gibson, C. H. Dickey, T. S. Byers, E. Southwick, and J. M. Olinger, were pall bearers, and the pastor, Rev. C. L. Heskett, conducted the services speaking words of comfort to the afflicted, after which interment occurred in the Maxwell cemetery.
