GARDINER - Emily a. Trovey** was born in Mercer county, Pennsylvania, November 12, 1842, and died at her home in Maxwell, Iowa, September 10, 1925, aged eighty-two years, ten months and twenty-eight days. She is the last of a family of seven children to pass to the great beyond. At the age of ten she lost her mother and she took charge of the home, raising a family of brothers and sisters to maturity. She came with her father and six brothers and sisters to Dallas county, Iowa, in 1855, and there she grew to womanhood, keeping her father's home and teaching in the pioneer schools. Her oldest brother have his life for his country at Atlanta in 1863 and the younger brother survived the war only a few years. She was married to James O. Gardiner, November 3, 1867, and to this union six children were born: A. R., of Humboldt, Iowa; Frank I., of Cherokee, Iowa; Fred O., of Fresno, Calif.; Ione, of Alameda, Calif.; Mrs. H. G. Stark, of Monrovia, Calif., and Mrs. E. F. Henderson, of Baxter, Iowa. In 1884 the family moved to a farm near Baxter, Iowa, and there the children grew to maturity. Her chief desire was for an education for her children and during her last years she took much interest in the college work of her grandchildren. Her life was spent in sacrifice for her husband and children and her home was her greatest joy and the center of her interest. She has lived in Maxwell since 1904, except for one winter spent in California and a few months with her daughter in Baxter. She is survived by her husband and six children, also six grandchildren. All the children were present at the funeral services with the exception of Ione, who spent the past summer with her mother. Mrs. Garner** was almost a life long member of the church, transferring her membership, together with that of her husband, to the Methodist Episcopal church in Maxwell, in 1916 under the pastorate of Rev. Frank Bean. In this fellowship she continued a devoted member to the day of her decease. The funeral services were opened at the house by prayer and concluded at the church, where her pastor, Rev. H. N. Smith, preached from Phil. 1:21. A large congregation of friends bore witness to their appreciation of her splendid life so well lived. Interment was made in the Maxwell cemetery. The relatives attending the funeral from a distance other than the children were: Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Tovey**, Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Guy Wallace and two sons, Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Gardiner, of Gardiner, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Gardiner, of Minburn, and a large number of old friends from Baxter." **Editorial note - Emily Trovey and E. H.
