IRA ALLEN FUNERAL TODAY
Body Brought to This City For Interment.
Ira J. Allen, who died at the Mary Greeley hospital in Ames on Monday morning at 8:00, was a native of Ontario, New York, where he was born August 24, 1844. When a very young man he enlisted in the army for service in the Civil war at his boyhood home in New York and served for three years. After receiving an honorable discharge from the army he came to Iowa settled first in Benton county, where he lived for a couple of years before removing to Story county.
Shortly after coming to Nevada he was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Blackman, who with the children are left to mourn his death. To this union nine children were born. One died in infancy, the eldest daughter Lena, died three years ago and seven are living.
The children are Mrs. P. R. Frazier of Morrison, Mrs. A. W. R. Boller and Dorr Allen of Nevada and Bert Allen, Mrs. L. H. Doggett, Mrs. J. H. Gilchrist and Mrs. Bernice Allen of Ames. There are also twenty living grandchildren.
The family home had always been in Nevada. Mr. Allen was a man well and most favorably known. Of later years he had been custodian of the high school building and grounds and he was a popular favorite with the alumni of the schools, the student body and the faculty as well Always attentive to his duties, yet he always found time to give attention to little details and favors for the teachers and scholars. No scholar or teacher had a greater interest in the athletic sports or other interests of the schools. He was always loyal in such matters and to have spoken with disfavor or discredit of one of his young friends was to invite his disfavor.
The funeral services were held this morning at 9:30 at the home on Lincoln Way in Ames, with Rev. E. C. McDade of the Methodist church of this city in charge. Following the services the body, accompanied by the funeral party was driven to this city, where interment was made in the Nevada cemetery.
The members of the sorrowing family will receive the profound sympathy of their wide circle of friends in their hours of sad bereavement.
