NEW PROVIDENCE BOY DROWNED

Could Not Swim and Stepped Into a Deep Hole.

Harold Steelman, age 12 years, son of Jody Steelman, of near New Providence, was drowned Sunday afternoon in the Iowa river near the railroad bridge south of Union.

He was in the water only a few minutes and stepped into a hole and could not swim. The body was rescued at once and an auto was immediately started with him to meet a physician with a pulmotor from Eldora, in answer to a 'phone message. The physician met them, but his efforts at resuscitation were futile. The boy's mother has been dead for a few years. His sisters keep the home for the father.

A large number of people were near the scene at the time, having gone to the river by auto in an effort to escape the heat. Young Steelman, with other boys, entered the water, which appeared to by only three feet at the point where they were wading. No one appears to have seen the boy go down, and no outcry was heard. When he was missed the father and other picnickers entered the water and the body was quickly removed.
