Hold Funeral Services Thursday for William A. Higgs

Maxwell, Jan. 31--Funeral rites for W. A. Higgs, who died early Sunday morning in his home after an illness of several months, were held Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church, with the pastor, Rev. Judson T. Perkins in charge, assisted by Rev. Ralph Quakenbush.

The floral offerings were beautiful. A male quartet composed of Gerton Nelon, Albert Green, Harry Fackler and O. O. Holtby, sang two number, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Some Day We'll Understand," with Mrs. Gerton Nelson at the piano. Pallbearers chosen from the Herald Lodge, were Rollin Coughenour, Foss Allen, A. F. Heinrich, Robert Postal, Boyd Martin and Van Gamble. The pastor read the following obituary:

William A. Higgs, son of Thomsas H. and Elizabeth Higgs, was born on Sept. 3, 1868 in Ogle county, Illinois, and died at his home in Maxwell, Sunday, Jan. 28, 1940; aged 71 years, 4 months and 25 days. He had been in failing health for several months.

When he was about three years old his family moved to Polk county, Iowa, and settled in Washington township. Almost all of his lifetime was spent in or near Maxwell, the last 22 years being spent in Maxwell.

On April 23, 1891, he was united in marriage to Christine Kopf. To this union three children were born, one daughter and two sons. The daughter, Irene A., died in 1937.

Mr. Higgs was a member of Herald Lodge of the A. F. & A. M. of Maxwell. He was well thought of by all who knew him. During his last illness he suffered much, but was very patient through it all.

Surviving are his wife, Christine; two sons, Verne E. Higgs of Maxwell and Wayne M. Higgs of Nevada; and nine grandchildren. Many other relatives and friends also mourn his death.

The services at the grave were in charge of the local Masonic Lodge. Burial was made in the family lot in the Maxwell cemetery. The rites were largely attended by relatives, neighbors and friends.
