Funeral Services Held For Collins Pioneer Resident
Collins, Sept. 29--Funeral services for the late Andrew J. Stevens, who passed away Thursday afternoon, following a paralytic stroke, were held at the home, five miles south of Collins, Thursday at 2:00 p. m., with the Rev. Donald Collison of Newton in charge. Music was furnished by Mrs. Wm. Morrison and Mrs. Glen Morrison.
The floral offerings were arranged by Mrs. J. H. Boyd and Mrs. Ernest Maxwell. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery at Collins and the pallbearers were Ernest Maxwell, James Hanson, Paul Borts, Frank Maxwell, Cecil Hampton and M. C. Dobson. The following is a brief obituary of the deceased.
Andrew J. Stevens, son of Benjamin and Martha Stevens was born Jan 15, 1863, and departed this life, Tuesday, September 22, 1942, at his home five miles south of Collins. He grew to manhood on a farm 2 1/2 miles south of Collins and was united in marriage to Kate A. Kitchel on Mar. 14, 1898, in Jasper county. To this union five children were born. Two sons, Howard and Herbert, preceded the father in death. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, two daughters, Mrs. H. C. Johnson of Langview, Tex. and Mrs. Jack Suttek of Des Moines, and a son Albert K. Kitchel [should be Albert Kitchel Stevens] of Mount Ayr, Ia. Mr. Stevens had spent his entire life on the farm and had lived in his present home for six years. He was a member of the Christian church and of the Newton Daily News Three Quarter Century club.
