Last Rites for Howard Abbott Tuesday Afternoon

Funeral services for the late Howard Abbott, 64, native son of Story county and longtime resident of Nevada, who passed away at his home at 733 Fifth Street, Friday evening, January 26, were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Nevada Methodist church with the Rev. O. E. Cooley officiating.

The Nevada I.O.O.F. lodge, of which the deceased had been a member for many years, conducted its impressive committal services in the church.

Casket bearers were Frank Vail, George Patterson, E. B. Ayers, Guy French, John Wycoff and Alfred Hansen.

The many floral pieces which banked the front of the church were testimonials as to the esteem in which the deceased and his fine family are held in the community.

Mrs. Norman Dobson was at the organ playing a number of appropriate hymns during the service. Burial was in the Nevada cemetery.

The following obituary was read by Rev. Cooley:

"Byron Howard Abbott was born near Cambridge, Iowa, January 1, 1881, a son of William and Mary Abbott and live the greater part of his life in and around Nevada. He died at his home at 733 Fifth street Friday evening, January 26, around 9:30 o'clock.

"He was united in marriage with Emma J. Olson of Lakeview, Iowa, January 24, 1917. He leaves besides his wife, five children, Mrs. Helen Dirksen and E. H. Abbott of Ames, Mrs. Ardyce Elkins of Miami, Florida, Lucille Abbott of Des Moines and Margaret Abbott of Phoenix, Arizona, one brother, William of Ames and one grandson, Ronald of Ames.

"Mr. Abbott had long been prominent in Odd Fellows' circles in Nevada, of which lodge he was a faithful member. He was also a member of the Modern Woodmen of America lodge.

"He leaves besides his relatives a large circle of friends."

Relatives from out of town in attendance at the funeral services were the daughters, Ardyce Abbott Elkins of Miami, Fla., Miss Margaret Abbott of Phoenix, Ariz., Miss Lucille Abbott of Des Moines, Mrs Helen Dirksen and Mr. and Mrs. Emmet Abbott of Ames, Alvin Olson of Lake View, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Olson and Mrs. Bernard Olson of Waukee, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Nelander of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Noah Page, Mrs. Alvin Anderson of Madrid, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Stensland and Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Stensland of Kelley.
