THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, August 21, 1902, page 1. "OBITUARY - Thomas M. Byers was born in Bellefountaine,** Ohio, July 12, 1826, and died in Maxwell, Iowa, August 13, 1902, age seventy-six years, one month and one day. He was married to Miss Mary J. Tipton April 3, 1851, after which they moved to Illinois where they resided a short time and then came to Iowa in 1860, and lived near Mechanicsville almost thirty-five years. He was an elder in the Presbyterian church for thirty-four years and took an active part in establishing a church at Mechanicsville in its early history. He moved to Maxwell in 1895 and united with the C. P. church here and has been a faithful member ever since, also being an elder here. His upright christian character has greatly endeared him to all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance, he was a public spirited man and was always ready to do whatever he could to further the interests of his town and community. Seven children were born to the union of Mr. and Mrs. Byers, five of whom are still living, Mrs. Byers also survives her husband. He was a kind and loving husband and an indulgent father, a good neighbor, a loyal citizen and a devoted christian and after a well spent life he has gone to reap his reward for years of faithful service to God and his fellow man. The funeral was held at the C. P. church in charge of the pastor, Rev. Clay Bobbitt, and the body was laid to rest in the Peoria cemetery. The grief stricken friends** have the sympathy of a host of friends." **Editorial note - Bellefountaine is spelled Bellefontaine, and friends should probably read family.
