THE DES MOINES REGISTER, January 19, 1997, page 7. Obituary: "Leslie L. "Mike" Byers, 91, of Mitchellville died of complications of pneumonia Saturday at Mercy Hospital Medical Center. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Santiago United Methodist Church, of which he was a member. Burial will be at Franklin Township Cemetery. Mr. Byers was born in Elkhart and lived in Mitchellville 60 years. He was a retired beef boner with Rath Packing. Survivors include his wife, Dona; two daughters, Marjorie Messinger of Des Moines and Marilyn Murrow of Colfax; a son, John Byers of Wadsworth, Ohio; a sister, Mabel Phares of Marshalltown; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Mitchellville Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to his church."
