Services in Collins For George Holmes
Funeral services for George Harrison Holmes were held from the Collins Church of Christ on Tuesday, May 11, with his pastor, the Rev. Henry Esch, officiating.
A quartet, Miss Lola Oswalt, Mrs. Ivan Mullihan, Eldon Geisler and Thomas Huntrods, accompanied by Mrs. Fred Mead at the piano, rendered most beautifully the songs "Rock of Ages", "God's Tomorrow" and "It Is Well With My Soul."
In care of the beautiful floral offerings were Mrs. G. C. Fish, Mrs. Dewey Kern, Mrs. W. Dean McKee and Ralph Vasey.
Serving as church ushers were Floyd Oswalt and Lloyd Holland.
Pallbearers were P. J. Weitrich, Ray Tiffany, Hugh Fertig, Thayer Derby, Benny Caulkins and Harold Hale. Interment was in the Collins Evergreen cemetery.
Obituary
George Harrison Holmes, son of Henry Dobson Holmes and Mary Elizabeth Holmes, was born in Collins township on Aug. 16, 1871, and departed this life Tuesday forenoon May 9, 1950, at the age of 78 years, eight months and 24 days.
He grew to manhood in the Collins cemetery and was united in marriage to Miss Laura M. Finnie of Collins on Dec. 1, 1895.
They established their home in the Collins community and lived there throughout the 54 and one-half years of their wedded life. To this union one daughter, Mary Ellen, was born. They have made their home with the daughter since July of 1945.
He united with the Collins Church of Christ in 1916 and remained true to his belief and faith to the end.
Surviving
Surviving his sudden passing are his wife, Laura; the daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Kenneth Tomlinson, one granddaughter, Joyce, one sister, Mrs. Flora Warrell of Maxwell, three brothers, John of Des Moines, William and Walter of Collins, and a host of relatives and friends.
His mother, father, three sisters and two brothers have preceded him in death.
Those attending the services came from Des Moines, Clemons, Maxwell, Elkhart, Slater and Nevada and possibly other nearby towns.
