THE DES MOINES REGISTER, Des Moines, Iowa, Monday, October 26, 1987, page 9A. - WALTER E. BACKUS - "Services for Walter E. Backus, 90, of 801 Eighth St., Altoona, who died Saturday of a heart attack at Veterans Administration Medical Center, will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Hamilton's Funeral Home. Burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mr. Backus was born in England and had lived in the Altoona area since 1942. He was a retired contractor. Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Mills of Cumming; a son, Marvin L. Backus of Des Moines; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home."
