THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, January 8, 1970. "SAM BACKOUS Sam Backous, 82, passed away at 12:30 p.m., Monday, Jan 5, at the Story County Hospital in Nevada, where he had been a patient for five weeks. He is survived by one brother, Walter of Walla Walla, Wash. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 1:30 p.m., at the Cooper Funeral Home, with Rev. Dale Ellsworth officiating. Burial was in the Peoria Cemetery.

MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, January 15, 1970, page 1: SAMUEL BACKOUS Funeral services for Samuel Backous were conducted at the Cooper Funeral Home in Maxwell, on Wednesday, Jan. 5***(editorial note - burial was Jan 7th) at 1:30 p.m., with the Rev. Dale Ellsworth officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Basil Caple. Casket bearers were Harper White, Dwayne Brown, Marvin Tomlinson, Dale Scott, John Ahrens and Velmah Tyler. Flowers were cared for by Coral White and Betty Enfield. Burial was in the Peoria Cemetery near Maxwell. Samuel Backous, son of William and Rose Tomlinson Backous, was born near Collins on Dec. 19, 1887 and died at the Story County Hospital, Jan. 5, after several weeks illness. At an early age, he moved with his parents to Wetonka, S. Dakota. Later he returned to Iowa and worked in the Maxwell community. Due to the advanced age of his parents, he returned to South Dakota and cared for them until their death, after which he returned to Iowa. He was a member of the Peoria United Methodist Church and the I.O.O.F. Lodge of Maxwell. On Dec. 28, 1960 he was united in marriage to Vera Lester. They made their home in Maxwell until her death in May of 1967. Surviving are one brother, Walter of Walla Walla, Wash., several nieces, nephews and cousins.
