THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, April 4, 1935, page 1, column 6. "MRS. WALTER BACKOUS - Mrs. Walter Backous, former resident of the Maxwell community, passed away at Omak, Wash., March 18, 1935, and was laid to rest in the Omak cemetery March 21, according to a letter received at THE TRIBUNE office from her sister, Mrs. R. J. Rogers. Mrs. Backous had made her home at Wenatchee, Wash., and vicinity for thirteen years. Her death resulted from a stroke, her illness lasting only three days. Mamie S. Powls** was born at Mitchellville, Iowa, April 18, 1874. She was married to Walter Backous May 28, 1890, and lived at Maxwell, Iowa, until 1914 when they moved to Olds, Alberta, Canada, where they resided eight years, moving to Wenatchee, Wash., in 1922. They lived in Wenatchee until 1932, then moved to Omak. Mrs. Backous united with the Methodist church when fifteen years of age and lived a faithful Christian life to the end. She was loved by all who knew her where'er she went. Deceased is survived by her husband, one son, Frank C., of Olds, Alberta; two brothers, three sisters and eleven grandchildren. Mrs. Backous was well known in this vicinity, where she resided for many years and the surviving relatives have the sympathy of the many friends of the family in the Maxwell community." **Editorial note, variations of maiden name Powls and Powell.
