Funeral Rites for C. E. Nowning Held Thursday at Slater

Slater, Feb. 27--Funeral services for C. F. Nowning, 84, were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home and 2:30 o'clock at the Methodist church. The services were in charge of Rev. Curt Noren.

The beautiful floral offerings were arranged by Mrs. A. J. Mays and Mrs. M. T. Nervig. Gifts of money to the missions were given by relatives and friends.

Louis Malmin sang "Abide With Me" and "Nearer My God to Thee". Mrs. Jeanne Marie Embree sang, "Does Jesus Care?". Mrs. Phil Rood played the accompaniments. The pall bearers were Myron Leonard of Waukee, P. O. Louks, Roy Halverson, Herbert Halverson, Morrill Nervig, and A. J. Mays.

Burial was made in the Slater cemetery.

Charles Frank Nowning was born Nov. 9, 1880, near Collins in a little log cabin that is still standing, and died at his home in Slater February 19th, 1945, at the age of 64 years, 4 months and 10 days. His parents were James and Abigail Nowning.

He was united in marriage to Ella Chambers of Garrett, Ill., in 1910*. To this union three sons were born. His wife died in 1918.

He attended the United Brethren church in Collins in his earlier years. His occupation was farming until about 14 years ago when he moved from Buena Vista County to Slater and has since worked as a gas station owner and painter.

A few weeks ago he entered the Lutheran hospital, Des Moines, for a check-up but an operation was found necessary. He recovered slowly, and less than two weeks ago he was taken to his home where a stroke hastened his death.

Three sisters and one brother preceded him in death. He is survived by his devoted wife, three sons, Charles Nowning of Richmond, California, Ted Nowning serving with the U. S. Army on the European war front and Caleb Nowning of Tuscola, Ill., one stepdaughter, Mrs. John Gunderson of Slater, also two brothers, Chalmer J. Nowning of Sioux Rapids, and three sisters, Mrs. John Ogle of Ames, Mrs. Charles Wade of Nevada and Mrs. Carrie Ayers of Wells, Minn., several nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. Among those from out of town at the funeral services were: Mr. and Mrs. Caleb Nowning of Tuscola, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wade of Nevada, Mrs. John Ogle of Ames, Stanley Nowning of Sioux Rapids, Mr. and Mrs. George Kimberly of Collins, Mr. and Mrs Stanley Bullard, Mr. and Mrs. V. Vincent and son Bill, a and Mr. and Mrs. Irving Nowning of Maxwell, and Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Hutchinson of Des Moines.
