Death of Aged Pioneer

Holger Birkeland, living four miles south of town, died Tuesday evening at eight o'clock after an illness of several months. Mr. Birkeland was 86 years of age at the time of his death.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon from Bergen church.

Holder Birkeland was born on November 18, 1835, at Imsland, Sogn, Vikedal, Stavanger, Norway and died at his home four miles south of Roland on Thursday, January 5, at the age of 86 years.

In June, 1866, he immigrated to this country, coming direct to Story County. A year later he was married to Borgilla Birkeland and shortly after moved to a farm 3 1/2 miles southwest of Roland. They lived here until the fall of 1869 and then moved to a farm four miles south of Roland where he continued to live until his death. Mrs. Birkeland died on June 22, 1900.

Mr. Birkeland leaves to mourn his death six children, Mrs. K. J. Jacobson, Dallas, Wis.; Osmund, Bernard, Henry and Betsey Birkeland all staying at home; and Mrs. H. O. Bakken of Luverne, Minn. All the children were present at the funeral. He also leaves 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from Bergen Lutheran church, of which Mr. Birkeland has been a faithful member since its organization.
